Paper Mache Maracas…FAIL

Ok, the third, and hopefully the last, fail post (for a very long time) of the week... Christmas break and, once again, my girls were bored.  What can we do with things I have lying around the house?  (Insert--me: search, girls: "no", me: search, girls: "no", me: search, girls: "no", finally...)  "How about paper mache maracas?"  "YES!!" Before I go on...I am not going to tell you how to make the maracas in this post.  I'll save that for when we can re-make them and they turn out...now let's continue... I knew we had flour, water and newspaper in the house, and I thought for sure we had some left over water balloons lying around.  After looking all over the place, I could NOT find the balloons.  I've got my girls all psyched up for these maracas and now we can't make them...what to do...?  Hmmm...how about a sandwich bag?  I'll just blow air into it, twist the top so the air can't get out, and tie it off with a twisty tie...  Good idea, in theory (mistake #1). My girls had … [Read more...]

Borax Crystal Snowflakes…FAIL

I have no idea why this week turned out to be a FAIL week for our projects but sometimes life just is that way. We promised to share our failures along side our successes. So here is another FAIL. This is what you SHOULD end up with photo courtesy of About This is what I got What I did wrong---I estimated rather than measured Here is what you will need measuring cup and spoon Borax 20 mule team bowl (pint size) boiling water pencil string pipe cleaner food coloring (optional) Cut a pipe cleaner into three equal parts and twist together Attach string to each snowflake and hang using a pencil, make sure they do not touch the side or the bottom of the jar Fill the jar with 1 pint of boiling water and carefully MEASURE 3 tablespoons of borax and stir until disolved. (you may add a drop or two of food coloring at this point). Set them aside for 24 hours and when you come back to them you WILL have pretty crystal snowflakes. Just in case you … [Read more...]

Tortilla Chip Snowflakes…FAIL

I labeled this "tasty treats" because NORMALLY it IS a tasty treat but when you get distracted and side tracked they burn in the oven and then they are no longer tasty =) Making your own tortilla chips is REALLY easy and they taste amazing (most of the time). Here is what you will need tortillas cooking spray sugar baking sheet oven scissors I used a circular cookie cutter to cut the tortillas into smaller circles first (if you get the burrito size you can get quite a few smaller circles from each one) Once you have the amount of circles you desire fold them in half and start snipping pieces out (much like you do when you make paper snowflakes) Place them on a baking sheet and spray lightly with cooking spray Bake at 350degrees F for 7 minutes (NOT 20 like I did...LOL). Then sprinkle with sugar once you remove them. ENJOY! Here is how they are supposed to look (this was the only one that wasn't burned to a crispy black dirt flake) *just a little funny thing to … [Read more...]

Dance Party!

It was Christmas break and if I heard "I'm booorrred..." or "what can we do?..." one more time I was going to SCREAM!  The girls were antsy and I was crabby.  Soo... I put a Kidz Bop CD in the stereo, cranked up the volume, and had a dance party with my girls!  It gave them something to do, got the antsies out, and uplifted my spirits. At this risk of self-embarrassment, I decided to post a video clip from our dance party.  Yes, sometimes I set up the camera and take a video.  #1--it's a memory to create, #2--my girls like to watch the videos of themselves dancing.  Nutty usually dances a little more than this and she's got some great moves.  For some odd reason, she decided she'd rather sing more this time.  This is one of her favorite songs... Remember last week's coloring with your kids post or the cloud watching post from a few months ago?  Having a dance party is another free, no-frills, spur of the moment, activities that you can do with your kids.  Go ahead and get … [Read more...]

Fun Stuff Fridays (#5)

Remember when Linkys were all the rage in blogging? They were a great way to find and get to know other bloggers before social media and Pinterest became mainstream. It didn't hurt that they brought a ton of traffic to your site too. Lindsi and I started our Fun Stuff Fridays linky back in 2011. We kept it going for 20 weeks before it fizzled out (or we got sick of doing it, I'm not sure which happened). It is now soon to be 2017 and at lot of the links in those linkies no longer exist. Plus, I've let my link up subscription lapse so you can't get to them anyway. Instead of deleting the Fun Stuff Fridays posts, however, I have decided to clean them up and make sure our featured links are still valid. After all, on a rare occasion I get traffic from one of these old posts. The linky may be gone but the featured posts are still valid as of December 2016... Welcome to Fun Stuff Fridays. We had 230 submissions last week and we couldn't believe it! To say we were left speechless … [Read more...]

Make your own play make-up

Play make-up....you know your girls want it. It's kind of ridiculously expensive and to be honest it's just junk. I feel like the stuff is REALLY hard to wash off too! I made my daughter her own set of make-up the other day and I thought I'd share it with you. Here is what you will need: empty make-up containers nail polish Wash out the empty make-up containers and dry them well. (If you don't have any empty ones you are willing to share then you can always go to the dollar store and buy some there and empty them out.) Choose the colors of nail polish you wish to use. I chose a cream for the "foundation," a rose color for the "blush," and some vivid greens for "eye shadow." Shake your nail polish really well and let set for a minute to allow the air bubbles to rise. Then, carefully pour the selected color into the container of your choosing. Ignore the blurry quality of this photo- I should have taken more than one shot- oops Set them up and away from … [Read more...]
