Valentine Inchworm Semi-Failure

Welcome to day 9 of Toys In The Dryer 14 Days of Valentines! From January 25 through February 7 we'll be posting non-stop Valentine's posts to celebrate this lovely holiday. I saw the most adorable Valentine Inchworms in the Oriental Trading catalog.  The problem was, I didn't need to make 24 of them, and I really didn't want to pay for the kits when I had most of the stuff to make them at home already.  So I went to the craft store and bought 1 piece of pink foam paper (is that what that stuff is called?).  The google eyes, jewels, pompoms, and pipe cleaners I had already. The above photo is from the Oriental Trading website and what I wanted our inchworms to kinda look like. I started by cutting the foam into 3/4 inch strips (the short way).  Then the girls folded them accordion style.  I thought our worms would stay folded.  I guess I haven't worked with the foam stuff enough.  No fear, we would glue it to make it stay! Um, yeah, even with the rubber band to hold … [Read more...]

Love Coffee Koozie

If you're like me...I'm sure your not (tee hee hee)...you sit and think about all those coffee koozies sitting in a landfill each time they hand you one with your tasty morning drink. Instead of using koozies you throw away, how about making your own that you can reuse! Even better, how about making a love coffee Koozie for Valentine's Day this year! I am a huge fan of upcycling....what is upcycling? It's reusing something that serves no purpose and transforming it into something you can use! I have gained a few pounds after having my four babies (come on...no grief needed!) and my old cream sweater didn't really fit me anymore. So it sits and sits and sits there in my closet tormenting me saying "ha, ha! You'll never wear me again!" (Big meanie!) I was looking at the sleeves thinking they would make GREAT coffee koozies! So away to work I went making a love coffee koozie. Here's what you will need to make your own love coffee koozie: An old sweater Felt Thread and … [Read more...]

Christmas Tree Bunting

Some of you may remember my Bunny Bunting Banner I made last spring for Easter. If not be sure to HOP over and check it out (sorry, I couldn't help myself).  I loved the way it turned out so much that I decided to make one for Christmas this year, except put a spin on it. Instead of using colorful paper (which you can still totally do) I decided to use Christmas colored fabrics and make little trees! I am SO excited with how it turned out and I thought I'd share it with you for a little inspiration as well.Gather enough fabric to make several trees. Cut and stitch them each, leaving the bottom open for turning right side out and for stuffing and adding the tree stump. *If your kids are good with scissors, they can help you cut the trees out.My least favorite part of sewing is making sure my corners (or points) are nice and precise. My grandma was a stickler for perfect sewing so I kind of feel like I would be letting her down if I gave it half of my effort. Using a small scissors or a … [Read more...]

Milk Art–Pinned it, Did it!

I've seen milk art all over Pinterest and was excited to try it with my girls.  Unfortunately, it wasn't quite as awesome as I hoped it would be...I'm not saying it wasn't cool and we didn't have fun...I'm just saying it wasn't as cool as the original post from Pinterest.  Theirs was just so neat and at the end was a really fun video.  Ours didn't look like either of those. We started by putting drops of food coloring in a thin layer of 2% milk on a plate...Then we dropped dish soap onto our food coloring drops and watched it react with the fat in the milk.  The food coloring instantly dispersed all over the milk.  It was neat to watch but again, not as cool as the video in the original post.In fact, my girls had more fun swirling the food coloring with a fork and making the above conglomerate.I then thought long and hard and took a second look at the original post. They had more food coloring and had it all in one place vs random drops.  So...we tried again...Much better!!  It was … [Read more...]
