Last month I had the opportunity to review an AT&T GoPhone. While I’ve been a loyal customer of the competition for as long as I can remember, I thought it would be interesting to try something new and see how they compare. Thus, despite some hesitation, I decided to give the GoPhone a chance.
In a previous post I mentioned some of the benefits of using a GoPhone vs a regular mobile phone. These include no contracts, cheap plans, and other things. I went ahead and compared AT&T’s GoPhone to my current service provider’s pre-paid plans. While both offer similar benefits and plans, AT&T’s most expensive GoPhone plan is $5 cheaper than my service provider’s most expensive plan. Hey, $5 is $5 and that can add up over time!
The phone I was given to try was the basic AT&T Z998 Android Smartphone. I’m not a super techy person so to me it was just another smart phone. I will say though that I wasn’t thrilled with the camera on it. It lagged a bit so some of my photos turned out blurry. I did get some awesome pictures with it though! Remember, you can bring your own phone into a GoPhone plan if you don’t like the ones they offer.
Ok, but what about the service? I’m ok without a great camera. I want to know how the network worked!
Again, I’m not a super techy person. All mobile phone providers say their networks are “the best”, “the most reliable”, and “the largest”. I can’t even begin to get nitty-gritty and compare coverage. What I can tell you is that AT&T has definitely upgraded their game since the last time I tried them! The “dead zones” or poor signal spots that once plagued AT&T in my area are no longer there. In full disclosure though, I stayed pretty much in the Twin Cities area with my phone and did not venture out far into the country. The road trip I was suppose to take with my hubby got canceled and I was not able to try my phone in remote areas.
There was a little slowness to some of the apps I used, but that seemed more of a phone issue than a network issue. The social media alerts on my GoPhone came through at the same time, if not sooner, than the alerts on my current phone. The internet worked fine for what I needed it to do, and I had no missed or dropped calls.
Overall, I do think that the GoPhone is a great choice for those who do not want the hassle of mobile phone contracts. For $5 less than my current provider, I will definitely consider a GoPhone for Nutty when she is old enough (in just a year or two!) to have her own phone. I also mentioned the GoPhone to my sister for when her in-laws visit from Chile. It’s the perfect choice for them to have a cell phone while they are here for their three week visits!
