Have you ever heard of Borax? In all honesty I have been using it for years. With four kids in this house (not to mention a husband) our laundry needs all the help it can get. A lot of people call me “crunchy,” in other words I like to use things that are natural or organic. Borax is completely natural! Borax is the common name for sodium tetraborate….it’s a substance that occurs naturally by the the constant evaporation of lake water. If you think about it, nature often makes the perfect things for us….whenever they occur naturally I think “hmmm, there must be a reason why nature made it.” When you use Borax you can rest assure that nothing is added to it…nothing! No chemicals, no chlorine, no phosphates, no sulfates. Borax has many uses too!
I posted on our Facebook page “I’ve heard of people using Borax in their laundry….what else do you use it for? Today I added a 1/4 cup to my dishwasher and ended up with spot LESS glasses!” I was shocked by all the responses I got. People shared that they use Borax for arts and crafts, natural ant killers, and other things.
Here’s a list of things I have tried with Borax:
- I poured a 1/4 cup of Borax in my garbage disposal and that nasty smell was gone! Completely!!! Add natural deoderizer to the many things that Borax can do.
- I added Borax to my laundry and my clothing came out stain free, crisp, and brighter. If you didn’t know, we shared a way to make your own laundry detergent and it contains Borax for this very reason.
- We put a 1/4 cup of Borax in our dishwasher and my glasses came out without spots and my dishes were sparkling clean.
- I added a 1/2 cup of Borax to my dishwasher just before we left for a long weekend away and we came back to a dishwasher that didn’t have that musty smell from being shut up for days.
- We also did the same thing with our front load wash machine. These wash machines are known for a musty smell if you leave it closed, Borax took care of that problem!
- I made my own cleaner with it too! Make an all-purpose cleaner by mixing 2 tablespoons borax and 2 cups hot water in a spray bottle.
- Hard water is a huge issue in our home. This leads to nasty toilet rings. I added a half cup of Borax to my toilets (ALL six!!!) and used the brush to clean them…they’ve never looked better!
I did a quick Google search for other uses of Borax and I was incredibly impressed with the list of things I came up with.
- Did you know you can use it to get ride of bed bugs? Sprinkle borax on your mattress, let it sit and vacuum it up.
- Scrub dirty pots and pans with a mixture of 1 teaspoon of borax and warm water. Because borax is non-abrasive, it will work on the grime without damaging the surface material.
- You can remove rust by mixing Borax with a tablespoon of lemon juice.
- Natural floor cleaner? Mix 1/3 cup borax, 1 tablespoons ammonia and 1 teaspoon dish detergent into 1 gallon of water.
- Remove stains from stainless steel or porcelain sinks with this recipe: Make a paste with 1 cup borax and 1/4 cup lemon juice.
- Make your own dishwasher detergent by mixing 1tablespoon borax and 1tablespoon baking soda.
- Have cats? Try mixing a few tablespoons of borax in with the litter.
- Deodorize and clean your fridge by washing it with a borax and water solution.
- Deodorize your garbage pail by filling it with borax and water. Let it soak then rinse it out.
