I said I was never going to do the viral “Ice Bucket Challenge” that has been going around. I have plenty of reasons for not doing it. None of which I need to defend to you. However, I DID end of taking the challenge after being called out by a fellow Red Cross Social Media Advocate, Astronaut Abby and my neighbor Annie. I put my own twist on the challenge though and you’re going to have to watch the video to see what it is!
Now that you’ve watched the video, I’ll lead you to this website: A few (impolite) questions about the ice bucket challenge. The author makes a few strong points that coincide with some my original reasons for not doing the challenge.
Here’s a link to the two causes/medical conditions/diseases (whatever you want to call them) that I support:
Spasmodic Dystonia: dysphonia.org/spasmodic-dysphonia.php
Spinal Muscular Atrophy (aka SMA): smafoundation.org
What cause do YOU support? I’d love for you to share awareness in the comments below!
Since my daughter is autistic that is of course a major concern for me. I also support Veteran & suicide prevention programs since the loss of my husband, who was struggling with PTSD and depression.
My daughter suffers from Selective Mutism. I often share posts regarding Selective Mutism because not many people know of it. Selective Mutism is a severe form of social anxiety that causes mutism mostly in children. Trying to spread awareness to get these children’s voices back! I also walk in the relay for life to support All cancer research after losing both my parents to prostate and breast cancer.
Childhood cancer is a cause that I dedicate my time and money towards.
I am very devoted to anything for children, especially Make A Wish foundation, and anything that supports children being trafficked.
Anything that has to do with cancer, I support. I also support Tourettes Syndrome.
Wounded Warrior Foundation. I also give monthly to Feeding America.
I support breast cancer awareness, as well as donate to the Children’s Miracle Network when I can.
I am a huge advocate to the Wounded Warrior Foundation, as well as various other ones that relate to children. I can never give much, but always give what I can.
I support the American Diabetes Association and The Oral Cancer Foundation
I support Wounded Warriors. I don’t support many organizations because many organizations take 85 – 90% of the donations to keep the doors open for business, and these are non profits, but the CEOs, board members are making 6 and 7 figure salaries. So I’m EXTREMELY selective. Red cross, St. Judes, United Way are the absolute worst to donate your money to because they take so much that should go to the people that actually need the money.
I keep praying that I don’t get called out for this challenge. But if I do, I’ll donate to the Wounded Warrior Foundation.
I support Down syndrome related causes where all or almost all of the money goes directly to the cause. (Something I understand may not be the case with the ice bucket challenge.) I didn’t feel guilty not forwarding chain letters and I don’t feel guilty not dumping ice on my head or writing a check. Supporting a cause isn’t a fad for me so I will continue to support the causes I support.
Veteran & suicide prevention are definitely things that need to be talked about more!
I’ve never heard of Selective Mutism. Start getting the word out!!
Yes, unfortunately as a pediatric nurse I see way too much childhood cancer.
Children being trafficked is not talked about much. Most people don’t think it happens in the US but it does!
Tourettes can be difficult to live with and something that most of the general public doesn’t understand or know about.
Both very good causes to support!
As a pediatric intensive care nurse, I appreciate your support of the Children’s Miracle Network!
We ALL wish we could give more! If I win the lottery, I’m definitely donating a chunk to some of my favorite causes/charities.
Oral Cancer Foundation–not a usual cancer that people support so definitely spread the word that there’s more out there than breast cancer and prostrate cancer!
That is the sad part about donating, not all the money actually goes to what people think it is going to.
Get called out for the challenge and do what I did, talk about YOUR CAUSE!
I agree with you! That’s why I used this opportunity to talk about what I support. It may not do much but at least I tried. Fad donating isn’t my thing either. Did you read the article I linked to about the problems with the ice bucket challenge?
