We’ve had yet another heat wave in Minnesota this week so I thought it was about time that I taught my girls how to make easy, no-freeze, homemade ice cream. Yes, this recipe is no-freeze so it’s super quick, and because it’s homemade, it’s super yummy too!
- 1/2 cup of half & half
- 1 Tablespoon sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon vanilla
- 1 sandwich size Ziploc bag
- 1 gallon size Ziploc bag
- 3 cups crushed ice
- 1/3 cup rock salt (sometimes called ice cream salt)
Step 1) Put the half & half, sugar, and vanilla in the sandwich size Ziploc bag. Seal it tight.
Step 2) Make sure the sandwich size Ziploc bag is definitely sealed.
Step 3) Put the ice and rock salt in the gallon size Ziploc bag.
Step 4) Add the sandwich size bag to the gallon size bag. Seal it tight.
Step 5) Make sure the gallon sized bag is sealed tight.
Step 6) Shake the bags for about 10-15 minutes until the ice cream forms. We ended up using a towel to hold the bags because they get super cold!
Above is what your ice cream will look like in the bag when done. You can eat it straight out of the bag or scoop it into a bowl and top it with your favorite toppings.
Step 7) Enjoy immediately or put in the freezer for later.
I’ve been wanting to do this all summer! Finally was inspired to go out today and buy rock salt. Silly me standing in the aisle at the grocery store while my 1.5 year old loaded us up on table salt (while I was looking the other way). Fortunately the store manager managed to find a random bag of rock salt (from the looks of things from last winter). Can’t wait to try it!
This is awesome! I’ve been hunting for a good recipe for ice cream because I really didn’t want to spend money on buying an ice cream machine maker. It’s been so hot here though so it’s been tempting! Thanks for sharing this, I’m going to try it out asap!
I’d just like to add to have a container of ice cold water available for rinsing the bag with the ice cream before opening it (especially the seam where the bag is sealed) to keep salt from getting into the ice cream. You could also double bag the ice cream bag.
This looks so good, and like it’s fun to make too!! 🙂 I’ll have to give it a shot!
