DIY CD Spinning “Tops”

I saw these DIY CD spinning "tops" on Pinterest a while ago and thought they'd be fun for my girls to make. Unfortunately, the pin did not lead to the site from which the photo came, so I can't credit the original idea. My girls' first response when I told them what we were going to do, was "um, lame mom." I told the girls to give these tops a chance, they just might like them... Not only did the girls like these CD spinning tops, they each made TWO of them! You can see their reactions in the video below. To make your own DIY CD spinning tops, you'll need: Old cds bottle tops (from things such as water bottles) marbles paint hot glue gun with glue 1) Start by painting one side of the CD. You can paint them however you want but bigger designs, such as chunks of color, work better. 2) Once the paint is dry, glue the bottle top onto the center of the cd on the painted side. 3) Flip the CD over to the unpainted side and glue the marble into the center … [Read more...]

Snowflake Suncatchers Using CDs

Early last month I posted a tutorial on how to make rainbow fish sun catchers using old CDs.  We had them hanging by our patio door for an entire month and go tons of compliments from people who saw them.  December came, however, and the rainbow fish really didn't fit into my winter/Christmas decorating scheme.  I got the brilliant idea to make snowflake sun catchers using old CDs!  Those have now replaced the fish and fit perfectly into my current decorating! Here's what you'll need: White paper 2 CDs per snowflake Glue Scissors String/ribbon This is super easy to do yet my girls had a ton of fun with it! Step 1) If you are using regular 8.5 x 11 paper, fold one corner to the edge.  Cut off the non folded edge to make a square.  From that square you can make a circle or just leave it square like my girls chose to do. Step 2) Have your kids fold their circle or square however they want.  You'll want them to fold it at least 4 times.  (At this point in time, my … [Read more...]

How to make rainbow fish sun catchers using old CDs

We all have old CDs laying around that, for some odd reason, we haven't gotten rid of.  If not, go through your kids' CDs, I'm sure you'll find some scratched, unusable ones in their collection!  What do you do with those CDs (besides throw them away)?  You make stuff out of them! I'm not a fan of cutting up CDs because they are full of heavy metals and once cut, the metals can leech out of them.  I prefer to do crafts that do not require cutting them up and risking heavy metal exposure for me and my kids.  Rainbow fish sun catchers are perfect! You'll need: Old CDs--2 per child Water soluble markers Coffee filters Super glue A spray bottle of water Scissors Small piece of paper Wiggly eyes String/yarn/fishing line Cookie sheet Step 1)  Have your kids color all over the coffee filters with the markers. Step 2)  Put the colored filters on the cookie sheet and spray them with the water so that the colors bleed.  (The cookie sheet keeps the water and … [Read more...]
